St. Maarten’s public transport is informal and served primarily by collective minibuses (vans). Most visitors rent a car.

Minibuses (Vans)

  • Routes: Philipsbus, Simpson Bay, Mahó, Marigot (French side), Grand Case
  • Fare: $2–3 per person per ride (standard island-wide)
  • Hours: ~6:00–22:00 (reduced on Sundays)
  • Flag them down anywhere along their route — there are no official stops
  • Pay cash to the driver when boarding
  • No fixed schedule — they depart when full (usually every 10–20 minutes on main routes)

Taxis

  • Standard routes: Fixed rates published by the St. Maarten Taxi Association
  • Airport to Philipsburg: ~$15–20
  • Airport to Mahó/Simpson Bay: ~$10–15
  • Around Philipsburg: ~$10–15 per trip
  • Taxis do not use meters — agree on the fare before starting
  • Official taxi stands at the airport, cruise terminal, and major hotels

Rental Cars

The most popular option for visitors. Major agencies (Hertz, Avis, Budget) and local companies operate from the airport. Driving is on the right (both sides of the island — French side also drives right).

Between St. Maarten and French Saint-Martin

  • Border: No passport control (open border since 1648)
  • Vans run across the border (Philipsburg–Marigot: ~$3)
  • Taxis across the border: ~$25–35
  • The border is marked only by a sign — just walk or drive through

Tips

  • Most visitors rent a car — it’s the most practical way to explore the entire island
  • Driving is generally safe but defensive driving is recommended
  • Scooters and motorcycles are also available for rent
  • For Mahó Beach plane-watching, take a van from Philipsburg ($2, 15 min)
  • The island’s compact size means nothing is more than 30 minutes away by car
